Nearby prices at the crush plants were down 75 cents to unchanged this week. November and December prices are in the range of $23.00-$26.00 per cwt depending on the location. 2027 new crop was unchanged. USDA Risk Management Agency (RMA) Harvest Prices for 2026 revenue insurance policies for sunflowers are out. The harvest price has risen to where it will take a yield loss to trigger a crop insurance payment. The harvest price per pound for oil-type sunflowers is 34.7 cents with confection sunflowers at 44.4 cents. Spring prices were 29.4 cents for oils and 37.6 cents for confections. It is best to check with your crop insurance agent to see if you are entitled to an indemnity check on this year’s sunflower crop. Sunflower harvest progress was slower after the recent moisture but advanced 15% to 62% complete for the week ending November 1. In the past week, producers harvested an additional 189,365 acres pushing 2026 harvested acres to about 780,000 acres. Harvest progress is 6% ahead the five-year average.  The weather conditions in the Northern Plains are expected to change to a warmer than normal and drier than normal pattern later in the week. These conditions should allow the remaining harvest to move forward.

Oil Premiums Can Improve Returns

For oil-type sunflower growers, the base bid is only part of the price calculation. Sunflower is the only oilseed that gets premiums at crush plants for oil content. Considering oil premiums that are offered at the crush plants on oil content above 40% at a rate of 2% price premium for each 1% oil above 40%; this pushes a contract with 45% oil content gross return 10% higher per cwt. That difference demonstrates why growers should compare complete pricing schedules rather than base bids alone. Check it out here: Oil Premium Calculator

Grower Report

Onida South Dakota grower, Chuck Todd says he has not started harvesting his sunflowers. He says the seeds are dry, but they are waiting for the stocks to dry down. He is hoping for a frost soon. Growers in his area that have started harvesting have been seeing yields of 2,000 to over 2,700 pounds per acre.
