world's tallest sunflower
No farmer wants an overly tall sunflower; there are just too many downsides.  But plenty of garden growers gravitate toward them — at least until the plants blow over in a strong wind.
Then there’s Hans-Peter Schiffer of Karst, Nordrhein Westfalen, Germany.  The Guinness Book of World Records lists Schiffer as holder of the record for the world’s tallest sunflower.  His record plant, grown and verified in 2014, measured 30 feet 1 inch (9.17 meters).  According to Guinness, Schiffer was a repeat champion, having set the record three times prior to 2014.
As the photo shows, Schiffer’s record sunflower was so tall that it required its own scaffolding as well as the aid of his local fire department to measure it.
