A Listing of Sunflower Seed Treatments, Herbicides, Insecticides
Following are labeled seed treatment, herbicide, and insecticide options available to sunflower producers as of March, 2001, courtesy of the North Dakota State University Extension Service.
These products are federally labeled for use on sunflower. However, growers in states other than North Dakota who may have questions regarding the appropriate use of any of these products are encouraged to contact their respective agronomists or university extension specialists.
Product listings are not meant to imply endorsement by The Sunflower or the National Sunflower Association. Users are reminded to follow label directions when applying any of these products.
More detailed sunflower product and pest information may be found on the NSA web site, www.sunflowernsa.com. Sunflower treatment information, along with production information for other crops, may also be found on the NDSU Extension web site, http://www.ext.nodak.edu.

2 P = Poor, F = Fair; G = Good; E = Excellent; () = Not registered for disease; No = No control
3 An increase in stand has been noted only once in moderately severe tests to date; under very severe conditions some increase in stand might be expected.
4 Provides excellent control of sensitive strains of downy mildew, but only fair control of insensitive strains, which are common.
BIOLOGICAL FUNGICIDE for Use as a Seed Treatment
Product Apply Disease Control Remarks
Bacillus subtilis
Kodiak 2.75% Drill box Root diseases of all crops Bacterium colonizes root system and competes with disease organisms that attack root systems.
HERBICIDES
Herbicide Weeds When to Apply Remarks and Paragraphs
Glyphosate Emerged grass and broadleaf weeds. Preplant or anytime prior to crop emergence. Non-selective, non-residual, systemic, foliar herbicide.
Apply with AMS fertilizer.
Refer to label for adjuvant use.
Paraquat Emerged annual grasses and broadleaf weeds Preplant or any time prior to crop emergence Non-selective, non-residual, foliar herbicide. Apply with nonionic surfactant (NIS) at 0.12 to 0.25% v/v. Good coverage is essential. A residual herbicide may be tank-mixed with paraquat.
Eptam
(EPTC) Grass and some broadleaf weeds. Preplant incorporated; Fall PPI after Oct. 15 Weak on wild mustard.
PPI immediately after application. May be tank-mixed with Sonalan, or trifluralin to increase spectrum of weeds controlled.
Sonalan
(ethalfluralin) Grass and some broadleaf weeds PPI.
Spring
Fall: From Oct. 1 to Dec. 31. Poor wild mustard and wild oat control.
Adjust rate according to soil type. Use highest rate allowed for nightshade control.
Foxtail
Suppression (7.5 to 12.5 lbs 10G) For use in reduced or conservation tillage. Incorporate twice at 2 to 3 inches deep using a V-blade under-cutter or rotary hoe. For fall applications, incorporate once in the fall and once in the spring before seeding.
Sonlan
(ethalfluralin) +
Eptam
(EPTC) Grass and some broadleaf weeds Preplant incorporated Adjust rate according to soil type and OM. PPI immediately after application. Poor on wild mustard.
Prowl
Pendimax
(pendimethalin) Grass and some broadleaf weeds Preplant incorporated Poor on wild mustard and wild oat. Adjust rate according to soil type. May be tank-mixed with Eptam.
Grass and some broadleaf weeds Surface applied from 30 days prior to planting to immediately after planting. This treatment in no-till sunflowers only. Use lower rate only for coarse textured soil.
Grass and some broadleaf weeds Fall: PPI when soil temperature is less than 45 F Keep spring tillage depth shallower than fall tillage. May be tank-mixed with EPTC.
Trifluralin Grass and some broadleaf weeds Preplanted incorporated Poor wild mustard and wild oat control. PPI within 24 hours after application. May be tank-mixed with Eptam.
Fall: PPI after Sept. 1 or Spring
Trifluralin +
Eptam
(EPTC) Grass and some broadleaves Preplant incorporated Enhances wild oat control and reduces potential carryover of trifluralin.
Spartan
(sulfentrazone)
Section 18 registration
approved Annual small-seeded broadleaf weeds including kochia, pigweed, lambsquarters, nightshade, and biennial wormwood Early preplant, Preplant incorporated, or Preemergence Make EPP application up to 30 days prior to planting. Adjust rate to soil type. Requires precipitation for activation. Provide adequate furrow closure at planting. Temporary sunflower injury may occur in coarse, low organic matter soils with pH greater than 8.0. May give 6 to 8 weeks residual weed control.
Assert
(imazamethabenz) Wild mustard. Postemergence
Sunflower: Less than 8 leaves or 15 inches.
Wild mustard: Prior to bloom. Sunflower injury may occur when applied at high temperature and humidity. Apply with NIS at 0.25 % v/v.
Poast
(sethoxydim) Annual grasses Postemergence
Grass: 2 to 6 inches. Apply with oil adjuvant at 1 qt/A to actively growing weeds. Allow a 70 day preharvest interval.
Select, Prism
(clethodim)
Registration
approved Annual grasses and quackgrass. Postemergence
Grass: 2 to 6 inches tall. Apply with oil adjuvant at 1qt/A to actively growing weeds. Allow a 70 day PHI.
Paraquat Desiccant Backside of sunflower heads yellow and bracts turning brown. Seed moisture content under 35% For use on confectionery and oilseed varieties. Apply with NIS. Randomly sample 10 average heads for seed moisture. Allow a 7-day PHI.
Drexel Defol
(sodium chlorate) Desiccant Same as above For use on confectionery and oilseed varieties. Thorough coverage of plant is essential. Apply aerially at 5 to 10 gpa or 20 to 30 gpa by ground sprayer.
INSECTICIDES
Insect Insecticides
Banded Sunflower Moth
Economic threshold is about one moth per two plants Asana XL, Baythroid, Furadan 4F, Lorsban 4E, Scout X-TRA, Warrior
Sunflower Moth
Economic threshold, at onset of bloom, is one to two adults per five plants.
Asana XL, Baythroid, Endosulfan 3EC
(Phaser, Thiodan), Furadan 4F, Lorsban 4E, Methyl or ethyl parathion 8 EC, 6-3 parathion-methyl parathion, Scout X-TRA, Warrior
Sunflower Seed Weevil
Economic threshold is about 4 to 8 adults per plant (oil), and one to two per plant (confection). Treat for red weevils at R5.1 to R5.4 stage of plant development. Asana XL, Baythroid, Furadan 4F, Lorsban 4E, Methyl parathion 8EC, 6-3 parathion -methyl parathion, Scout X-TRA, Warrior
Sunflower Midge
There are no effective chemical controls currently recognized for this pest. The best management strategy has been rotation to crops other than sunflower in the vicinity of large infestations. Selecting hybrids for their ability to tolerate midge infestations should be considered when choosing seed.
Sunflower stem weevil
Economic threshold is one adult per three plants in late June to mid July Asana XL, carbaryl (Sevin), Furadan 4F, Lorsban 4E, Scout X-TRA, Warrior

Wireworm
Lindane (seed treatment)
Economic threshold recommendations are according to NDSU. All of these insecticides are Restricted Use Pesticides except Lorsban 4E, Lorsban 15G, Endosulfan 3EC (Phaser, Thiodan), carbaryl (Sevin) and Lindane. Virtually all treatments have pre-harvest intervals, and many have posting and re-entry requirements—follow label instructions closely.
