NSA Hits Airwaves at PBS
John Sandbakken, National Sunflower Association marketing director, was a guest on the “Creative Living with Sheryl Borden” television show in January. This show, in its 34th season with the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), is a magazine-formatted “how to” show produced by KENW-TV of Portales, N. Mex., and distributed via satellite by Westlink. The show is available free of charge to all PBS stations. They are able to use the segments for up to three years.
Sandbakken prepared four recipes using sunflower oil and kernel. His appearance on the show allows NSA to reach many consumers, showing the versatility of sunflower products in different cooking and baking applications and encouraging their use in home cooking. “Consumers are becoming more and more aware of healthy food choices and are considering more products labeled high-fiber, low-calorie, low-sugar, reduced-fat, natural, etc.,” Sandbakken notes. His main message to viewers was based on the positive health attributes of sunflower oil and kernel. “Using venues like ‘Creative Living’ creates awareness and trial purchases of sunflower products,” he points out.
The show will be first broadcast in the Portales area, after which it will be made available to other PBS stations.
