Market Outlook
3/10/2010
Sunflower prices have enjoyed a nice rebound since the January lows for both old and new crop. Historically, prices peak into May-June for both old and new. Price dynamics will include the level of 2010 intended sunflower acreage. At this time it is difficult to determine where 2010 acreage is going to be given a generally wet and late spring in most areas. Sunflower new crop prices put potential returns near the top when compared to most other crops in most areas. There may be additional opportunities for sunoil exports to non-traditional markets with the Argentine sunflower crop expected to be down sharply. World sunoil prices are expected to trend higher over the next several months with Argentine and Black Sea supplies becoming limited. Soybean oil continues to generate a greater portion of the soybean value. That is likely to continue and actually increase which will provide support to high oil content seeds like sunflower. Sunflower prices may not have much downside going into summer unless there is a lot of seed looking for a home during this time frame.
