CROP AND WEATHER COMMENTS Crop maturity for the northern region/Canadian sunflower crops remains a concern. Last week’s temperatures were from 4 to 10 degrees below normal. Temperatures this week (August 24-30) are forecast to be much closer to normal. A frost before September 7 in portions of the northern region would impact sunflower still in bloom. That portion of the sunflower plant in pollination would be vulnerable to a frost. Light rain has been common throughout the northern production region which leads to concerns of late season diseases. Overall, the crop throughout the production region continues to be rated good to excellent by USDA. Kansas, North Dakota and South Dakota ratings improved from last week while the Minnesota rating decreased.
