It is this area that is in need of additional heat units. Most of the crops in the northern region are behind schedule. Heavy and destructive rains fell in NE North Dakota and NW Minnesota last week. Most areas throughout the entire production region have adequate soil moisture. Planting of sunflower continues in the High Plains region. Most of this is double cropping following the wheat harvest. PRODUCTION ISSUES The early sexual stages of rust on wild and volunteer sunflower has been found in most of the sunflower regions. Dr. Sam Markell has developed an excellent overview of the present situation. This includes what if any control measures to consider and when to implement those measures. That information is on our website and has been emailed to CCAs, county agents and all NSA members. Please forward that information to others. NSA SUMMER SEMINAR The recent NSA Summer Seminar held in Alexandria MN was a great success with excellent speakers and many opportunities to socialize and make business contacts. Well over 200 individuals were registered for the meeting. One of the highlights was the dedication of the plot planter and combine by sprinkling sunflower seed over the machines. USDA ARS officials from Washington DC and Colorado participated in the dedication. The NSA contribution of the plot planter and combine to USDA ARS is unique. A long list of industry and grower checkoff contributors were recognized including Larry Charlet (entomologist), Brent Hulke (geneticist), Tom Gulya (pathologist), William Kemp (Center Director) and Gerald Seiler (botanist).
