Fresh Hybrids for ’10
December 2009

Editor’s Note: The following listings consist of hybrids that are new for 2010 planting or were available in only limited quantities for 2009. Each company obviously has additional varieties for sale as well as those listed here. For more details, visit the listed websites or contact your local seed company representative.

The hybrid descriptions were provided by the seed companies.

Note: Not every company provided listings of their new hybrids in time to meet our printing deadline. Such listings may appear in our January issue.

Croplan Genetics

• Croplan’s 179 is a 98-day maturity confection with very large seed size. It has better than average test weight and very attractive color and striping. The 179 will produce seed that will be accepted by the confection processors.

• 306 DMR,NS is an 88-day maturity mid-oleic hybrid that has been an excellent producer in trials from Canada to the High Plains. It is a NuSun hybrid with excellent yield potential and very good oil content. It also is resistant to all prevalent U.S. races of downy mildew. This hybrid is approximately two days earlier than 803 and has higher yield and oil content.

• 460 E,NS is approved for the DuPont ExpressSun trait system with Express herbicide with TotalSol soluble granules. This is a 97-day NuSun hybrid with very strong roots and stalks. Given its combined oil content and yield potential, along with the new weed control practice, this is one hybrid you need to get on your farm. The 460 had similar oil per acre to 3080 in the past two years’ trials.

• 555 CL,DMR,NS is a 94-day NuSun hybrid with outstanding oil content and yield potential. This is our first Clearfield hybrid in this maturity that is resistant to all prevalent U.S races of downy mildew. It also is resistant to the new downy mildew strain found in 2009. This hybrid has very good late-season plant health, with a distinct yellow color at maturity.

Contact your Dahlgren field rep early for best availability. The 95EXCL-Clearfield version of 9530 combines uniform bloom, drydown and excellent yield with Clearfield herbicide tolerance traits.

• 4416CL is an early maturing Clearfield NuSun variety with excellent uniformity and seedling vigor. This NuSun hulling variety gives growers additional marketing options. Very limited quantities are available for 2010.

• 9579 is a new single-cross XL confection variety best adapted to western North Dakota and South Dakota. This hybrid offers uniform plant height and bloom for easier insect control.

All Dahlgren XL varieties are available with a total production contract.

• 8N358CLDM is Mycogen Seeds’ best oil content NuSunฎ hybrid in the Clearfield family; also carries genetic resistance to downy mildew. It is a mid-season, medium-height hybrid with good drydown characteristics. This hybrid is suitable for northern planting areas with shorter growing seasons.

• 8N270CLDM, Mycogen’s earliest Clearfield hybrid, also carries genetic resistance to downy mildew. It will have very similar appearance, yield and plant health to 8N270. It tends to flower a day earlier than 8N270 and is 0.5 percentage unit higher in oil. Root and stalk lodging are similar to 8N270. This product will work very well in the NuSun oil, birdfood and hulling markets.

• 8N433DM is a full-season downy mildew-resistant hybrid. It is medium-tall with an excellent tolerance to root lodging. 8N433DM has very good oil content and a solid NuSun oil profile (oleic acid levels in the mid-60s).

• 8H288CLDM is an early maturing high-oleic hybrid offering Clearfield herbicide technology and genetic resistance to downy mildew. This hybrid has medium-short plants that produce good yields of very high oil content seed. It will have superior drydown characteristics.

• 8H449CLDM is a Clearfield version of 8H449DM. Developed for use with the Clearfield production system, it continues to provide genetic resistance to downy mildew. It is a mid- to late high-oleic hybrid with excellent oil content and very high oleic acid levels.

• 8H419CLDM is a downy mildew-resistant version of 8H419CL. This hybrid combines genetic resistance to all known U.S. downy mildew races with Clearfield herbicide technology. It is a medium full-season hybrid and is widely adapted when planted in a timely manner.
