MARKETS:
There was a rumor today in the markets that Russia is going to ban exports of sunflower seed, oil and meal. If this happens it could make things interesting for old and new crop prices. Argentina is forecast to have a larger crop this year going from 2.3 MMT to 3.4 MMT but this won’t make up for the Russian crop of 6.0 MMT if it is held off the market. Significant rainfall in parts of the Dakotas and Minnesota on Monday has brought on cooler temperatures. According to the USDA reports above, much of the crop in the northern region is approaching physiologic maturity. Desiccating will be an option in the northern section of the U.S. It appears that U.S. vegetable oil is competitive on the world market. Exporters reported this week that nearly 100,000 tons of new crop soybean oil was sold to a variety of overseas customers. This kind of volume is highly unusual since the U.S. is the residual home of a consistent 1 million tons of soybean oil year in and year out. This follows the apparent sale of U.S. sunflower oil last week to unusual places like India. It is likely that the U.S. will be one of the key suppliers of world vegetable oil for the coming marketing year. This is due to a number of low price exporters out of the market because of reduced supply. |
